Reach the Oracle WebCenter Summit with Fishbowl Solutions at Collaborate 13

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

I have been using the analogy that sometimes getting WebCenter projects started, progressed or completed is like climbing a mountain. Customers aren’t always sure where to begin, how to stay on path, or what obstacles may lie ahead. Most customers seem to want to evolve their WebCenter use cases, say from standard content management to an enterprise portal, but not knowing such things as the amount of effort required, technical complexities, and deployment options tends to keep such projects at the base of the proverbial WebCenter mountain.

What better place to start your trek up that mountain than Denver, Colorado – site of Collaborate 13. Fishbowl Solutions will be there, and we would enjoy discussing your WebCenter projects and how we might assist in helping those projects get started, progressed and completed – avoiding the cliffs and jagged rocks along the way. We would also like to share with you some new and exciting ways that your trek can be made easier through our value-add WebCenter solutions. Here is a quick description of the solutions we will highlight at Collaborate 13:

These solutions will be demonstrated in our booth – #1277 – and will be discussed across our six presentations. Be sure to check out our Collaborate 13 page for all the details on our Collaborate activities. We look forward to helping you start your WebCenter ascent at Collaborate 13.

Fishbowl’s ShipIT Hackathon Event Produces Four, New, Value-Add Components for Oracle WebCenter Content

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

The weekend of November 10th was known as Innovation Weekend at Fishbowl Solutions. Fishbowl’s development, sales and marketing teams participated in a “ShipIT Hackathon” event to develop new Oracle WebCenter Content-based products. If you aren’t familiar with hackathons, just imagine a very intense software programming session where the end goal is to develop usable software within a set period of time – here is Wikipedia’s definition, and you may remember that Fishbowl participated in a similar hackathon at Oracle OpenWorld. Anyway, Fishbowl’s WebCenter UI and UX design extraordinaire, John Sim, was visiting from London and he was the catalyst for Fishbowl’s internal hackathon. Here were the rules that he helped establish:

  1. The new software/functionality should either support one of Fishbowl’s current products or provide new ways to interact, utilize, or provide an integration with Oracle WebCenter Content.
  2. The finished product should be deployable to Fishbowl’s internal WebCenter Content system and be usable by Fishbowl employees.
  3. Teams will have only 24 hours to complete their product.
  4. The winning team would be decided by votes from all participants, but participants could not vote for their own team.

At 3:00 PM on Friday, November 9th the hacking commenced. Fueled by Red Bull, pizza, coffee and sugar, four teams of Fishbowl employees developed the following WebCenter-based programs by 3:00 PM on Saturday, November 10th where they were presented and voted on. Here they are in order of finish:

  • 1st Place – WebCenter Content Multi-Checkin
    • Enables users to drag and drop content items directly into Oracle WebCenter Content from desktops or file shares and be tagged with keywords.
    • Checked in content bypasses the check in metadata screen and instead is grouped within a user’s “workspace”.  Users can return to their workspace at a later time to add metadata.
    • Integrates with Fishbowl’s Duplicate File Checker to ensure that duplicate content items do no enter the system.

(The winning hackers – left to right: Paul Heupel, John Sim, Tom Jaede)

  • 2nd Place – Filtered Search Results and Grid View Metadata Updater
    • Update metadata on multiple items at once using a simple grid format.
    • Content Server query defines items to display in grid view with configurable sorting and result count.
    • Easily configure columns to view and update both standard and custom metadata values.
    • Uses Excel-like functionality within the browser such as copy, paste, drag, and fill-down.
  • 3rd Place – Duplicate File Checker Desktop Application
    • Lightweight desktop application can detect and remove duplicate content items from user desktops or network file shares.
    • Users simply browse to a folder or item and select the content they want to check against already existing in Oracle WebCenter Content. Any duplicate items are returned to the user in a grid view, and the user can select any duplicates for deletion.
  • 4th Place - WebCenter Content and Google Drive (Docs) Synchronization & Contribution
    • Provides ability to import content stored in Google Drive to Oracle Webcenter Content.
    • Google Drive files can be batch imported and their metadata can be mapped or the files can be published directly to WebCenter Content.
    • Includes ability to also link to Google Drive document directly from WebCenter Content.

Aside from some mild cases of indigestion, carpal tunnel, and weariness; the participants in Fishbowl’s ShipIT hackathon all agreed that it was a great event to be a part of. It was really exciting to see what could be developed in a limited amount of time when a group of people worked together and were driven by a deadline. The best part was ending up with four new WebCenter-based products that solve real-world problems and add immediate value. If any of these products interest you, feel free to contact us at 952-465-3400 or info@fishbowlsolutions.com.

Fishbowl Solutions completed its second webinar in its Summer Seminar Series. On May 31st, we kicked things off with “Exploring Enterprise Search Options for Oracle WebCenter Content”, and last Thursday we discussed “Creating a Visually Rich and Personalized WebCenter-Based Intranet in 60 Days or Less”. We weren’t able to answer all the questions that were asked during the webinars, so I have included those below. I have also included links to the slide decks and audio, as well as white papers and other content associated to each topic.

We hope you have enjoyed the webinars thus far and that you will be able to join us for the remaining topics – ECM on the Go: A Quick Start iPad Application for Mobile Content Management (June 14) and Preview Fishbowl’s SharePoint Connector for Oracle WebCenter Version 2.0 – Beta Customers Wanted! Exploring Enterprise Search Options for Oracle WebCenter Content

Q & A

Q: What is the minimum version of GSA to be compatible with your connector?
A: Fishbowl’s GSA connector supports versions 6.8 to 6.14 of the Google Search Appliance.

Q: How is the connector licensed?
A: Per Oracle WebCenter Content Server instance.

Q: Does Fishbowl’s GSA Connector for WebCenter come packaged with the file share and SharePoint connectors?
A: No. Google provides database, network file share and SharePoint connectors directly. These connectors need to be configured on the GSA device itself – as does Fishbowl’s connector for Oracle WebCenter Content. Fishbowl’s consulting services group can help your organization with these configurations.

Q: During your demo, you showed conducting searches directly from and having results display in Content Server. Is using Content Server as the Front End for enterprise searches the only way your connector works?
A: No. That is just one example of how our search templates can be deployed. Similar templates can be deployed to, for example, the Front End of the GSA device itself. This is where you could incorporate your company’s style sheets and logo.

Creating a Visually Rich and Personalized WebCenter-Based Intranet in 60 Days or Less

Q & A

Q: If you do not use folders in your WebCenter Content instance, can you use this to show content in WebCenter through internet in a box with the metadata elements only, therefore eliminating the need to use folders in WebCenter? At the moment without your tool, we have to use folders when using WebCenter Content and WebCenter Spaces?
A: Yes, between metadata, security and personalization you can easily accomplish this.

Q: Can you create unique menu structures for user groups or specific users? E.g., “hidden” menu options for executives vs. field personnel.
A: Yes you can.  Between metadata and personalization with LDAP values that can be mapped to you can accomplish this.

Q: How can you pass the contentID through Content Presenter?
A: This solution uses JSR 286 portlets for content integration.  Content Presenter ties a piece of content to a page portlet view during the portlet creation activity.  A template will also need to be provided.  You must make sure the content server is setup correctly in order to allow the portlet you use to query the content server to select the content for presentation.

Q: Is the Demo using PS5?
A: Yes. The version of WebCenter Portal used today and deployed to Fishbowl’s demonstration system (showMe) is PS5.

Q: Can the URLS be simplified?  Particularly if used as an extranet.
A: If the deployment still resides in Spaces this becomes a little more problematic.  The solution can be deployed to its own portal container (not Spaces) which will allow this to be handled more cleanly.

Q: Does your responsive design reformat for each device?
A: Yes, by its nature, that is what responsive design enables. At a high level, responsive web design utilizes cascading style sheets 3 (CSS3) so that a web site and its design can be seen correctly on large screens (monitors), small screens (tablets), and tiny screens (smart phones). With responsive design, a website’s page layout is “fluid” not fixed, and therefore adjusts with the various screen sizes it will be viewed on. Fishbowl simply utilizes its CSS3 development expertise to apply this technology to web sites, including Intranet sites.

Q: Isn’t WebCenter Sites replacing Spaces and Site Studio? Why should I implement Spaces when Oracle is phasing them out?
A: Sites is more of a replacement for Site Studio and recommended for large scale web experience management requirements. Spaces, although it may go through some refactoring as a results of Sites, will reside within the core portal application which expected to be there for some time.  Even in the event of the major change to Spaces, Fishbowl’s Intranet in a box approach can be deployed as a standalone portal app in its own container.  We would simply need to replicate some of the key features around replication and management of the assets as they are applied to the Spaces portal framework. This is not a difficult task for our team.  The solution has been architected in such a way that supports an easy migration.
